Description
This is a row of nine shops dating to around 1840 in Newton Abbot. The building is constructed of painted stucco with a continuous slate roof and stacks to the party walls, some of which are moulded, some rendered, and others truncated. It has double-depth plans with rear additions.
The exterior has three storeys and an 18-window range, with individual units of two, three, and four windows, articulated by rusticated quoins. A modillion cornice runs along the top. Moulded architraves and bracketed sills are present; those to the first floor have cornices and ears, with some featuring shoulders. Most of the upper-floor windows are 6/6-pane sashes without horns, except for No.26, which has late 19th-century plate-glass sashes, and No.34, which has two plate-glass sashes to the first floor. The shop fronts have been altered in the 20th century.
The building's design is imposing and reflects the significant expansion of Newton Abbot between 1840 and 1860 under the Courtenay family. The interior was not inspected.
