Description

The Whiteway chest tomb, located about 11 metres north of the west wall of the tower of the Church of St Michael, dates from the mid-19th century. It is made of freestone and features a hollow-chamfered plinth, an oversailing lid, and reeded corner pilasters. The earliest inscription on the lid is illegible, while a later inscription on the north side commemorates Walter Whiteway, who died in 185- (the last figure is illegible). The chest tomb was previously surrounded by iron railings.
