Description
The walls to the Fairwater in the churchyard, located to the west of the Church of St Michael in Kingsteignton, are likely from the 19th century, although the leat, known as the Fairwater, has ancient origins. Constructed from local grey limestone rubble, the leat runs underground to the north and south but is open in the center, creating a picturesque feature in the churchyard. The watercourse may date back to medieval times and once powered three mills. In 1879, the Whitsuntide Ram Roast ceremony was still being held, believed to have originated from the annual cleaning of the Fairwater, as noted in White's Devonshire (1878-79).
