Description

Greenhill is a house built around 1820-1830, featuring a stucco exterior and a slate roof with gabled ends. It has end stacks and notable ironwork on the front. The layout is a double depth four-room plan with a central passage leading to the stair at the rear, two heated principal rooms at the front, and service rooms on either side of the stair. The house stands two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front, characterized by deep eaves supported by paired brackets that form a canopy over a seven-bay wrought iron balcony and verandah. The ironwork includes scroll-decorated standards and lattice panels, with outer bays featuring a spider web design. The ground floor has banded rustication, a central front door with six fielded panels and a rectangular fanlight, and two ground floor four-pane sash windows that are replacements in original embrasures. The first floor has twelve-pane sashes on the left and right, and a central two-leaf glazed door leading to the balcony, topped with a high transom and small panes with margin glazing. A first floor bell is located on the right gable end. The rear elevation is slightly set back at the left end, with a central round-headed sash window above a rear gabled porch. The interior has not been fully inspected, but the central passage features a plaster ceiling rose and a stair with stick balusters, along with other surviving interesting features. Greenhill is a well-preserved example of a Regency house, distinguished by its ironwork, and is somewhat isolated by new housing development.
