Description
8 and 10 Courtlands Road is a semi-detached pair of houses dating from the mid-19th century. The building features painted stucco and a shallow-pitched slate roof with moulded stacks at the party wall and gable ends. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall. The façade is symmetrical with a four-window range and a central pediment, creating a 1:2:1 fenestration pattern.
The exterior includes a continuous cornice, a frieze band, a string course, and a plinth. Moulded clasping pilasters are present at the quoins and pediment, with moulded architraves around the first-floor 8/8-pane sash windows. The ground floor features eared and moulded architraves, with 9/12-pane sashes on the outer ranges, 12/16 panes on the inner left, and French windows on the inner right. The central two bays are stepped forward beneath a pediment. The gable returns have wide copings, eaves bands, and pilasters at the rear quoins. Large semicircular-arched recesses contain semicircular-arched windows on the first floor and entrances below. The 20th-century rendered rear includes 19th-century two-light windows. This building is a notable example of a classical villa and is part of the Courtenay Park development laid out in 1854.
