Description

The Hermitage is a late 17th and early 18th century house located on Ringmore Road, Shaldon. The exterior is painted render over a cob structure, with a hipped thatched roof featuring a ridge stack centrally to the right and end walls. The original plan consisted of four rooms with a through-passage, alongside a stack to the left of the passage, and a later two-storey wing with a slate roof. The house has two storeys and a four-window facade. The ground floor has 6/6-pane sash windows, while those on the first floor have 18th-century pointed arches breaking through the eaves, creating a near eyebrow dormer effect. Canted bays with 6/6-pane sash windows flank a 19th-century half-glazed four-panel door, which is set beneath a flat-roofed trellised porch. A pointed-arched window, added in the 20th century, is situated to the inside left. The later wing features a leaded circular window on the first floor to the left and a 6/6-pane sash window to the ground floor. The interior was not inspected.
