Description
The Teignmouth War Memorial is a First World War memorial dedicated in 1921, with additional names added after the Second World War and 20th century conflicts. It is made of granite featuring beaten-lead lettering and is surrounded by cast-iron railings.
The memorial consists of a stepped square base topped by a rough-hewn tapering plinth and obelisk. Stone panels on the plinth commemorate those who fell in the First World War, with the inscription on the south-west face reading, ‘ERECTED IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ TEIGNMOUTH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919’. The base features an inscription dedicated to the memory of the men and women of Teignmouth who lost their lives in the Second World War, stating ‘DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE/ MEN AND WOMEN OF TEIGNMOUTH/ WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE/ SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945’. Additionally, a triangular panel above lists the names of three men who died in later 20th century conflicts. The other faces of the memorial display the names of those who died during the various conflicts. The memorial is enclosed by a set of small decorative cast-iron railings and shaped stone posts.
