Description
35 Northumberland Place is a house built around 1818. It features painted stucco with freestone coping on the parapet and window sills, and has a slate roof that is hipped at both the front and rear, with a brick chimney stack on the right. The house has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with a single-window range.
The exterior includes a full-height curved bay with tripartite sash windows on all floors; the second-floor centre window has 4/8 panes, while the others have 8/8 panes. To the left, there is a doorcase with pilasters and an entablature above a six-panel door. The left side facing Queen Street features an early 19th-century doorcase with fluted pilasters and an entablature over a late 19th-century six-panel door, along with an early 19th-century three-over-six pane sash window to the left. Other windows on the property date from various mid and late 19th centuries.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to contain a large shell alcove, likely from the late 19th century. Historically, some research suggests that this house, or No. 38 (which is not included in this listing), may have been where the poet John Keats once lived, rather than No. 20, which is known as Keats House.
