Description
The Princetown War Memorial is a First World War memorial cross that was unveiled in 1921, with later additions. It is constructed from Dartmoor granite and is located on the south side of Tavistock Road, 32 meters southeast of the Church of St Michael, which is listed as Grade II*.
The memorial features a 3.5-meter tall cross with chamfered edges, which is stopped towards the foot of the shaft. This cross stands on a two-stage plinth that is square in shape, raised on a two-stepped, octagonal base.
The main dedicatory inscription, made of applied metal lettering, is located on the front (north) face of the upper stage of the plinth. It reads: ‘IN PROUD, GRATEFUL, AND / HONOURED MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / OF PRINCETOWN, WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE / OF THEIR COUNTRY DURING / THE GREAT WAR, 1914 – 1918’. The south face of the plinth is inscribed with the words "THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE". The names of 33 fallen soldiers are listed on the other sides of the plinth.
The names of those who served in the First World War are also inscribed on the faces of the base below. The Second World War inscription is found on the front face of the upper step of the base, reading ‘1939 - 1945’ followed by four names. Additionally, the tread of the step below features the most recent inscription, ‘2001 – 2014’, followed by one name.
Surrounding the memorial is an octagonal granite cobble pavement, which is accented by eight low pyramidal corner posts, also made of granite, that support a chain.
