Virginia Cottage And Attached Wall And Gate Piers To The Rear Right

Virginia Cottage is a house located at a right angle to the lane, lower than Brook Lane in Shaldon. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and was remodeled in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of roughcast cob and features a double-pitched plain tile roof with rendered stacks at the gable ends of both sections. The early roadside block on the right has a one-unit plan, while the lower mid-18th century block has a two-unit plan, along with a later rear range.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a four-window range. It includes 19th-century two-light casement windows, with those on the first floor positioned at eaves level. There is a repositioned carved door to the right of centre, which is sheltered by a swept canopy supported by square columns. On either side of the door, there are canted bays with swept roofs and French windows that feature Gothic glazing bars in the overlights. A large external stack is located at the left gable end.

Inside, the room on the left has an open fire that connects to the external stack, while the room on the right features a chamfered cross-beam. The earlier range on the right is smaller in scale and rises to the road level.

Attached to the rear right of the cottage is a 19th-century red sandstone rubble wall, approximately 2 meters high, which runs along the lane and borders the back garden for about 20 meters. There are also two white-painted gate piers, located approximately 8 meters from the house, topped with squirrel finials.
