Description
The Old Cottage is a house likely dating from the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of painted roughcast over red sandstone rubble and cob, with a half-hipped thatched roof. A ridge stack is located to the left of the front door and a further stack to the right end of the roof. The cottage has a two-unit plan, featuring an end stack to the right-hand room and a stack to the large left-hand room, which backs onto the original entrance position. A 19th-century rear addition exists.
The cottage is single-storey with an attic, and has a three-window façade. The windows are predominantly 20th-century, consisting of a central door and 2-light casement windows. A small stone-mullioned pointed-arched 2-light window, possibly dating from the 14th century and later reset, is located at eaves level in the centre of the first floor. The interior was not inspected but is reportedly characterized by good late 17th-century cupboards set into the fireplace recesses.
