Description
Pear Tree Cottage is a farmhouse, likely dating from the late 16th century. It is constructed of whitewashed cob with a thatched roof, featuring two ridge stacks, one to the left of the through passage and one to the left of the hall. The original layout comprised a four-bay through-passage plan. The lower end of the house, on the right-hand side, was destroyed by fire and has been reconstructed in the 20th century. The exterior features a single storey with an attic and a five-window front. There are three 2-light casement windows in eye-browed half-dormers, and three-light casements to the ground floor. A thatched gabled porch sits to the right of centre. A 20th-century door and latticed windows are visible.
Inside, a staircase now occupies the former through-passage. The room to the left of the entrance door contains an open fire with a 20th-century timber lintel placed over the passage. A massive chamfered crossbeam is present, resting on a rough timber corbel, and may be a replacement from the 18th century. The joists are also chamfered with roll stops. To the right, a plank and muntin screen with a moulded cornice has a 20th-century door leading to what was a former inner room, now a kitchen. The roof structure features a four-bay jointed-cruck collar-truss with scarfed joints to trenched purlins, and shows no signs of former smoke blackening.
