Description
Virginia Cottage and the adjoining outbuilding to the north are a house and cartshed dating from around the 17th century. The structure is made of roughcast stone rubble, with the west end covered in slate. It has an asbestos slate roof with half-hipped ends. The building has been significantly altered and features a two-room plan, which may have originally been part of a larger three-room house that has since been reduced. Each room is heated by a large rendered internal lateral stack, one located on each side of the building. There is a rectangular stair projection on the north side, and the cottage is two storeys high.
The west gable end is half-hipped and slate-hung, with some slates arranged in recessed diamond and heart shapes. This end includes one two-light casement window with glazing bars and 20th-century boarded shutters. The south side, which faces the road, has a lean-to porch with a slate roof located to the right of the stack. The interior has undergone many changes on the ground floor, and later stairs have been added in the original stair tower. The roof and first-floor rooms have not been inspected.
The adjoining cartshed, which has a hay loft above, is at a lower ground level to the north. It is constructed of slate rubble and features a tarred slate hipped roof. There is a cart entrance on the north side with a slight brick arch and a loft door above. To the right (west) of the cartshed, there is a lean-to with a door at the end.
