Description

Fernside is a cottage located on Hound Street in Sherborne, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with remodelling and extension of an earlier range, and further alterations in the 19th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble and rendered at the front, topped with a plain tile roof featuring gabled ends and gable end stacks with tall brick shafts.

The cottage has a two-room plan in the front range, which originally included a central entrance passage but is now one large room with a stack at the right-hand end. The very thick wall at the back of the left-hand end suggests that this room was originally heated from a lateral stack. At the rear, there is a short wide wing with a gable end stack, which may have originally been a parallel rear range.

The exterior is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical two-window front. On the first floor, there are two late 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. The ground floor has two late 19th-century sash windows with vertical glazing bars and a doorway to the right of centre, which has a 20th-century door. At the rear, the wide gable-ended wing to the right has a gable end stack and 19th and 20th-century casement windows.

Inside, the partitions between the rooms in the front range have been removed. The fireplace at the right-hand end is from the 20th century, and the presumed rear left lateral fireplace is blocked. In the left end wall, there is a china-cupboard niche with a moulded plaster reeded domed head. The rear wing features two chamfered ceiling beams. Although the roof space is inaccessible, the feet of straight principal rafters are visible. The internal joinery is mostly from the 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations.
