Description
25 and 27 Victoria Road are a pair of houses with shops, built in the mid-19th century. Shops were added in the late 19th century, with some modern updates in the 20th century. The buildings have stone rubble side walls and a plastered timber-framed front, with disused end stacks and one rendered chimney shaft featuring some old pots. They have a slate roof and are designed as mirror images of each other.
The exterior features three storeys with attics and a three-window front, which is lightly blocked out as ashlar. Number 25 has a late 19th or early 20th-century timber shop front with a recessed central doorway that contains a 20th-century door. The shop front of Number 27 was rebuilt in the late 20th century and includes a timber mullioned-and-transomed four-light window with glazing bars. Above the shop fronts, there are three windows; the first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes, except for the right-hand one, which has been altered to a 4/6-pane sash. The second floor features 3/6-pane sashes. The buildings have a low parapet with rilled coping and a parallel roof. The right-hand shop, Number 27, has been taken over by the adjacent Victoria Hotel.
The interior has not been inspected. This pair of houses is included for their group value, as they are part of a notable group of houses and shops built on reclaimed land from the old mill pool in the second quarter of the 19th century. New Road, now known as Victoria Road, was constructed in 1825 to allow horse-drawn carriages to enter and exit the town for the first time.
