Description

A pair of small houses located in Dartmouth, built around 1830-40. The houses are constructed of plastered stone rubble, with the front carefully treated to resemble ashlar. They feature end stacks with plastered and exposed brick chimney shafts topped with old pots, and slate roofs.

The plan is mirrored, with each house having a single-room width and two rooms in depth. The exterior presents a symmetrical three-window facade, with the outer window bays recessed between full-height pilasters. The central bay contains paired doorways, now with recessed 20th-century doors, but originally topped with blind windows. The windows are 12-pane sashes. Two gabled attic dormers, likely dating from the 19th century, have replacement bargeboards and windows.

The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of historic interest. These houses are part of a good group of artisan housing along Charles Street, which enclose the west side of the Market Square. The entire area was developed in the 1820s and 1830s on land reclaimed from a former tidal mill pool.
