Description

The Windjammer Public House is a public house with residential space above, dating from around 1830. It is constructed from plastered stone rubble and features disused stacks with no visible chimneyshafts, topped by a hipped slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan and was likely built as a pair of mirror-image houses.

The exterior is three storeys high with a three-window front, which is plastered and has rusticated quoins at each end. The ground floor has a 20th-century pub front with a central doorway and flanking windows that include glazing bars. The original window arrangement above consists of tall 12-pane sashes on the first floor and 3/6-pane sashes on the second floor, with central blind windows on both floors. The building features deep eaves with a plastered soffit and a parallel roof that is taller than its neighbors, with gables at each end. It includes two front dormer windows that are slate-hung with hipped roofs, containing more 3/6-pane sashes.

The interior has not been inspected. The Windjammer is included for its group value as part of an important collection of early 19th-century buildings overlooking the Market Square, which was developed in the 1820s on land that was reclaimed from the old mill pool. New Road, now known as Victoria Road, was constructed in 1825 to allow horse-drawn carriages access in and out of the town for the first time.
