Description

35 Victoria Road is a mid-19th century house located in Dartmouth. It is constructed from plastered stone rubble and features end stacks with rendered chimneyshafts and some old pots, topped with a hipped slate roof. The house has a double-depth plan, two rooms wide, with a central entrance hall.

The exterior is three storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front that is plastered. The ground floor includes a central recessed doorway with the original three-panel door, which is topped by a tall overlight with glazing bars. All front windows are horned 12-pane sashes, with the first-floor windows being taller than those on the ground floor. The eaves are plain, and the roof is hipped to the left. The left return features a three-window arrangement, but the windows towards the front are blind and face the stack. There is a tall and narrow stair window from the first to the second floors, with a secondary doorway below. At the rear, the lower floors have horned 4-pane sashes, with the bottom one situated in the middle of a tripartite sash, while the second floor has an original 12-pane sash. A 19th-century stone plaque near the front is inscribed "Victoria Place."

The house is part of a notable group of houses and shops built in the second quarter of the 19th century along New Road, which was renamed Victoria Road in 1825 to accommodate horse-drawn carriages entering and exiting the town.
