Description

Captain Jago's House is a house dating from around 1860, constructed of stuccoed stone rubble. The hipped roof has been re-clad in asbestos tiles, and there are two stone rubble lateral stacks at the rear. The house has a small two-room plan with stairs located between the rooms, rising from a central entrance lobby. The rooms are heated by the lateral stacks at the back, and the large Doric portico at the front was likely reused from an earlier building. There is a 20th-century single-storey wing projecting from the front left.

The exterior features two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical three-bay east front. The ground floor has French casements, with the right window featuring margin panes of stained glass and the left window replaced. The first floor has a 12-pane sash window on the right and a casement window on the left. The central Doric portico has fluted columns and an entablature with triglyphs, leading to a round-headed doorway framed by a moulded architrave, which includes a semi-circular fanlight with radiating glazing bars and a two-panel door. Above this, there is a storey with a 12-pane sash window and a gable. The rear elevation has two lateral stacks and a large attic dormer situated between them.

Inside, the straight staircase rises from the entrance lobby, featuring an arch on consoles. The right-hand room has a moulded plaster anthemion ceiling cornice and a re-used early 19th-century chimneypiece, along with panelled doors. This house is a notable example of a small mid-19th-century town house, distinguished by its fine earlier 19th-century Doric portico.
