Description
A pair of contemporary houses built in the mid-19th century, with shops inserted into the ground floor in the late 19th or early 20th century. The houses are constructed of roughcast stone rubble with stone rubble end stacks, plastered brick chimneyshafts topped with old pots, and a slate roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, a mirror image for each house with central entrance passages.
The symmetrical front of the houses presents three windows across three storeys, with attics above. The paired central doorways have recessed top-glazed six-panel doors with narrow overlights. The left-hand shop front has been modernised, while the right-hand one has been converted into a garage. Remnants of the original late 19th or early 20th century timber shop front remain, with a continuous fascia stretching across both houses, supported by end brackets. The upper windows are 12-pane sashes, with the first-floor windows being taller than those on the second floor. A central window is missing on the first floor, and a central blind window is present on the second floor. The eaves are plain, leading to a parallel roof which has two 20th-century dormers.
The interiors have not been inspected. These houses are part of a notable group of houses and shops that date from the second quarter of the 19th century, situated along Victoria Road (formerly New Road). Victoria Road was constructed in 1825 to allow horse-drawn carriages to access the town for the first time.
