Description
No. 6 Charles Street is a house that was originally two small houses, built around 1830 to 1840. It was altered when the two houses were combined in the late 20th century. The building is made of plastered stone rubble and features end stacks with plastered brick chimney shafts and old chimney pots, topped with a slate roof.
The house is two storeys high with a symmetrical front that has two windows. There are central paired doorways set back in the same opening; the right doorway is now blocked, while the left contains a 20th-century top-glazed door. The windows are original unusual sash windows, each with eight panes and margin glazing. The eaves are plain, and there are more original sash windows at the rear.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest. The houses on Charles Street form the west side of the Market Square and are part of a notable group of artisan dwellings. The entire area was developed in the 1820s and 1830s on land that was reclaimed from the old tidal mill pool.
