Description
Newlands is a pair of small houses, now divided into flats, dating from the early to mid 19th century, with some modernisation in the late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco and roughcast on stone rubble, featuring end stacks with brick chimney shafts and a slate roof. Each house is one room wide and one room deep.
The exterior rises to three storeys and has a two-window front. No. 10 has a plastered front with a 16-pane sash window on the left on each floor, and a narrow 4/6-pane sash window on the first floor to the right of the doorway. Newlands has 16-pane sash windows on the right, a 4/8-pane sash on the second floor, and a tiny light on the left at about the second-floor level. Both houses feature a plain timber cornice at first-floor level, and their doorways contain late 20th-century part-glazed doors. The roofs have plain eaves and are gable-ended.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. These houses were originally back cottages to Nos. 11 and 12 Market Square and are part of a group located in a narrow backstreet close to the Market Square.
