Description

Lower Manor Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, possibly with earlier origins. It is constructed of rubble, rendered on the south front, with a slate roof, originally thatched. The building extends across two storeys, incorporating a basement and attic space. It features an original entrance passage facing a stair turret, which is positioned off-centre to the right and adjacent to a narrow, full-height gabled projection. Heated rooms are located at each end, with a third stack to the rear stair turret, which also connects to a granary at the upper level. The present entrance is through the lower gable end, over the basement. The rendered front has two bays plus one, with mainly three-light glazing bar casements. A door is positioned off-centre to the right, beneath a glazed lean-to conservatory. The left gable, coped and featuring a small stack, includes various small openings, a basement door, and a flight of steps leading to a lean-to extension. The rear features a lean-to with a large external stack and a connection to the granary via a flight of steps. A large gable stack is present at the higher end gable. The interior roof includes slightly peaked and chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and one truss of cruck-like form. A wide plank door is situated at the foot of the spiral stair, which extends through two floors. The interior has been extensively modified, and original fireplaces are absent. The building’s layout is complex, resulting from its adaptation to a challenging sloping site.
