Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church built in 1882 by St Aubyn. It features pink rock-faced coursed rubble with granite dressings and has scantle slate roofs with granite coping on the gable ends, which are topped with apex crosses. The church is designed in the Perpendicular style, with the nave and chancel combined into one space. It has long north and south aisles that contain three-light Perpendicular panel tracery windows, and a five-light Perpendicular window on the east side. The south porch has a moulded two-centred arch with carved spandrels and a label.

The west tower is three storeys high, featuring string courses and a moulded plinth, with buttresses that have set-offs positioned back from the corners. The tower is topped with an embattled parapet and has a polygonal stair turret at the north-west corner, which also has battlements. There are three-light Perpendicular traceried openings for the bells and a four-light Perpendicular window above the west doorway, which includes shields in the spandrels. The church is situated on a steep site, with a semi-circular vestry that has a conical roof on the lower north side, overlooking Newton Creek at the estuary of the River Yealm.

Inside, the church features four-bay north and south arcades, plus an additional bay in the chancel for arcade chapels. The walls are plastered and adorned with murals. The interior has unceiled wagon roofs with carved bosses and angels in the chancel. There are elaborately carved contemporary furnishings, including choir stalls, benches, screens, a pulpit, a lectern, a font, an altar rail, and a painted reredos.
