Description

The Royal Dart Hotel, overlooking the River Dart and adjacent to the railway station, dates to around 1850 and is built in the Italianate style with stucco cladding. It has a low-pitched hipped roof covered in bitumenised slate, featuring overhanging eaves supported by brackets.

The main three-storey-and-attic block has three bays facing the road. The ground floor is rusticated, with segmentally headed recessed windows and a doorway on the right-hand side. A band separates the ground and first floors, and the first and second floor windows are set within three tall round-headed recesses with moulded arches and continuous imposts. The second floor windows are round headed, with panelled aprons beneath. Three square attic windows sit above a moulded cornice. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars. A very large, segmentally arched carriageway on the right (north side) provides access to the quay, and above this are five round-headed windows (two blind), creating a linking bridge to an Italianate tower on the north side. The tower has a rusticated ground stage, rusticated quoins to the second stage, and round-headed first-floor windows. A clock face is positioned above a heavy moulded cornice, and the bell-stage has three small, louvred openings on each side, topped by a hipped roof with large shaped brackets to the eaves soffit. The river front of the main block features a wide, splayed two-storey bay with a cast iron balcony with a tented roof supported by thin iron columns. A two-storey wing extends northwards from the carriageway, with the first floor supported on iron columns, forming a covered way to the railway station platforms.

The Royal Dart Yacht Club, established in 1866, occupied rooms within the hotel before relocating to a new clubhouse in 1881; the hotel was formerly known as the Royal Dart Yacht Club and Family Hotel.
