Description

Waddeton Court is a large country house built in 1829, located near the site of an earlier house in landscaped gardens that overlook the River Dart. The house is designed in the Tudor style and constructed from dressed local grey limestone with freestone dressings. It features a slate roof with gabled ends, moulded bargeboards, finials, and a crested ridge. The building has two storeys and an attic, arranged in a 2:1:2 bay configuration, with a centre that projects and is gabled. The windows include two-light ovolo moulded stone mullions with hood moulds, a four-light window on the ground floor, and a three-light window on the first floor, both with cusped heads. There is also a small single-light attic window in the gable above.

At the rear, there is a large mid-19th century wing with a principal east elevation that features gables on the left and right, and a projecting gable on the left that includes a gabled porch. The house has plain stone chimney stacks at the ridge. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to contain "some good specimens of ancient carving," which may refer to the remains of the manor house located to the north. Waddeton Court is the seat of the Studdy family, and Henry Studdy was the founder of the Royal Dart Yacht Club in 1866, which initially had club rooms in the Royal Dart Hotel until its own premises were built in 1881.
