Description
Sarah Roope's Almshouses consist of five almshouses and a Sunday School room, dating from 1840, as indicated by a tablet on the second floor front. The buildings were restored around 1951. They are constructed of slate rubble with red brick window arches, and the south end is hung with scantle slate. The roof is hipped and made of asbestos slate. The structure has three storeys and two bays, featuring small sash windows with glazing bars, although some have been replaced with casements that retain the original glazing bar style. All openings are topped with red brick flat arches, including three plain recessed archways fitted with 20th-century glazed bars. Slate window cills are present, and there are red brick chimney stacks at both ends and one at the centre rear. A later 19th-century polygonal porch is located at the north end, which has a plaque stating 'Trust Houses renovated by public subscription Festival of Britain year 1951'. The almshouses were established in trust by Miss Sarah Roope.
