Description
The Ferry Boat Inn is a public house, likely built in the 18th century, with remodels from around the mid-19th century and some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed from stone rubble with rendered surfaces on the south and wet elevations, topped by a slate roof that features a gabled north end and a hipped south end, adorned with black glazed ridge tiles.
The building has a rectangular plan, probably originally consisting of two rooms with a central entrance. The left room was heated by a gable end stack, while the right room has a rear lateral stack and a cellar below, accessible from the shore of the River Dart. Significant internal alterations occurred, likely in the 20th century, including the removal of ground floor partitions and the addition of a bowed single-storey extension across the front.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical south front featuring two windows. The first and second floors have 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, with the second floor windows set in cambered head openings. The ground floor has a single-storey bowed extension built in the 20th century, which has a flat roof, a round-headed central doorway with a plank door, a fixed light window to the left, and a 20th-century sash window to the right. The right-hand end facing the river includes 20th-century windows, a two-light second-floor casement with a cambered head, a 16-pane first-floor sash, and a wide ariel on the ground floor with a cellar doorway below, which has a 20th-century door. The interior has not been inspected.
