Description

Holly House is a cottage, likely from the 18th century, possibly remodeled from an earlier house that may have included the adjoining house Dartside to the right. It features roughcast stone rubble with a slate roof that has gabled ends and red clay ridge tiles. The left gable end has a stack with a rendered shaft and two turned red clay pots. The layout consists of two rooms with a central cross-passage, with both rooms heated by gable end stacks. The cross-passage leads to an axial passage behind the right room, providing access to a straight staircase against the rear wall and a back doorway to the right.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-window east front, with the windows and doorway slightly to the right. The windows are 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. The doorway, located to the right of centre, features an early 19th-century six-panel door, where the bottom panels are flush and the top panels are glazed. There is a 20th-century gabled open porch. At the rear, there is a small outbuilding to the left. The front garden area is enclosed by a wall, probably from the 19th century, made of local limestone and slate rubble with cement capping, and includes a central gateway with projecting piers.

Inside, the ground floor has early 19th-century six-panel doors and an 18th-century stud and panel partition behind the right room. There is a 20th-century straight staircase to the rear right. On the first floor, there are two early 18th-century fielded panel doors. The roof space was not inspected, but the foot of one straight principal rafter is visible from the first floor.
