Description
The Old Brew House is a mid-19th century house and store, which may have originally been a pair of cottages. It also incorporates lavatories that were part of the Ferry Boat Inn. The building was later said to have been used as a social club, and has undergone alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, stuccoed and lined out as ashlar, with an asbestos slate roof, gabled ends, and red clay ridge tiles. The original plan was rectangular, consisting of two or three rooms, with entrances at the front and access to a cellar at the right-hand end. A large outshut is situated at the rear.
The south front has three windows. A first-floor window on the right-hand side has been blocked. The windows are 20th-century replacements with glazing bars. Two doorways are present, one to the right of centre and the other towards the left end, both with 20th-century glazed doors. A larger opening on the ground floor at the right-hand end has been blocked, and a small 20th-century louvred window inserted in its place. The right-hand corner of the building is rounded. The right-hand, east-facing gable end has reused 19th-century Gothic windows on both the ground and first floors, with trefoil-headed lights. The attic window has a pointed arch and intersecting tracery and leaded panes. A late 20th-century plank door provides access to the cellar. The rear outshut is of stone rubble construction with a corrugated asbestos lean-to roof. The interior has not been inspected.
