Description

The Old Post Office is a small house built around the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed from slate rubble and features red brick window arches. The roof is slate with gable ends and includes agee cast iron gutters adorned with lion masks at the joints. There is a rendered stack at the right-hand end of the building.

The layout consists of two main front rooms and a central entrance, likely with smaller service rooms at the back. The left side of the house was formerly used as a post office, which is probably the one mentioned in Kelly's Directory of 1889.

The exterior is symmetrical and two storeys high, with a three-window south front. It has late 19th century or early 20th century four-pane sash windows in their original openings, which are topped with cambered red brick arches featuring small keystones and slate sills. The central doorway has a late 19th century or early 20th century panelled and glazed door, accompanied by a wooden porch from the same period. This porch has wooden latticework in the gable and sides, and a slate roof with pierced crested ridge tiles. To the left of the doorway, there is a projecting shop/post office bay window with six large panes on the front and a hipped slate roof. To the left of the porch, there is a blocked doorway with a cambered red brick arch. The rear elevation was not inspected. The interior was not accessible during the survey in 1988.
