Description

A pair of attached cottages, likely dating from the 18th century or earlier, with remodelling and probable extensions in the 19th century. The cottages are constructed of plastered stone rubble and cob, with a thatched roof featuring gabled ends and an axial stack with a later short shaft behind the ridge. They likely originally comprised two-room plans with central entrances. The cottage on the right, known as Southern Cross, and the right-hand room of Corner Cottage may have formed the original house, which was subsequently divided into two cottages and extended by one room – the left-hand room of Corner Cottage – in the 19th century. The front elevation is asymmetrical and has a 1:4 window arrangement; the bay to the left is a later extension with higher eaves. There are 19th-century 2 and 3-light casement windows, some with glazing bars. Three first-floor windows may be early 19th-century casements with small panes. A 19th-century panelled door is located to the right of the centre (Southern Cross), and a 20th-century open porch covers the doorway and window immediately to its right. A 19th-century panelled door with a 20th-century lean-to shingle roof porch is at the left of the front (Corner Cottage), and the window immediately to its right has a wooden frame. The rear elevation was not inspected. The interior is not accessible.
