Description
This is a detached estate cottage built around 1850, located approximately 120 metres southeast of Hazlewood House. The cottage is constructed from rubble, rendered on the south front, with brick dressings and a slate roof. It features a cross-gabled plan over two storeys, positioned with its long axis along the steep slope of the ground.
The main south front has two windows on each level, all of which are 2-light glazing bar casements. There is an arched blind centre unit above a plank door, which is sheltered by a pent hood supported by poles. The central flush gable includes a blind oculus and caps on pilasters that extend down to the plinth, with set-in pilasters at the eaves on either side and a bold mid-string that highlights the pilasters.
On the east gable, facing the valley, there is a 20th-century 2-light casement in a blocked opening with a 4-centred brick arch. Both verges are coped and rest on kneelers. The rear of the cottage features a flush centre gable with an oculus, flanked by large chimney stacks. There are three blocked openings with brick 4-centred arches at the upper floor and a lean-to structure in two bays below. The interior has not been inspected. This estate cottage showcases a deliberate and striking design that complements the main house.
