Description
The wall approximately 90 metres west of Wembury House is a large structure that may have been defensive and is the only remaining part of a late 16th-century mansion. It dates from around the late 16th century and features an enormous rampart made of stone rubble with granite dressings, topped with a grassed walkway. The outer (west) revetment wall includes buttresses with set-offs and moulded saddle-back coping. The eastern side is also buttressed but lacks stone coping. There is a flight of steps on the eastern side that leads down to a lawn in front of the house. Wembury House was constructed on the site of a grand mansion owned by Sir John Hele, who purchased the estate in 1592 and is said to have built an enormous house, of which only this wall remains. The wall is believed to have served as a fortification against pirates due to its proximity to the coast.
