Description

Kingsland is a former Philosophical Institute, now a house, dating to 1840. It has a smooth rendered façade, covered by a slate roof. The building is set well back from the road, with a high rubble plinth on the right to accommodate the sloping ground. The front elevation is two storeys and three bays, featuring two-light casements with horizontal bars and segmental heads, set within sunk panels with grooved rustication and keystones on the ground floor. A heavy Ledolcian Doric portico with a plain frieze and architrave stands to the side. Above, a plain string course marks the first-floor level, where three two-light casements with a transom and horizontal bars are framed by four Ionic columns supporting an entablature and pediment. The right-hand return wall is tall and incorporates a three-bay frontispiece with a central two-light casement; the remaining bays are blank. The rear is hipped and includes two sixteen-pane sashes flanking a trompe l'oeil panel, with a small lean-to addition. Large stacks are present centrally to the left and right flanks. Kingsland was originally built as a group with the adjacent pair of houses.
