Description

Lower Yanston Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been significantly altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of rendered rubble with an asbestos-cement slate roof and brick stacks. The house has a layout shaped like an "L," incorporating a staircase in an internal angle and a cross passage leading to the original kitchen on the left. It is two stories high, and all windows are 20th-century casements. The front elevation has one window to the left of a recessed, wide 20th-century door, with a small stair window to its left and another directly above the door. Further to the right is another window. A return wing features a small square stair light in a projecting wall section, along with two windows at the eaves above the door and a ground-floor casement. The left gable has an external brick stack, raised in brick, and a first-floor casement. The right return has a half-hip design and plain walling. The rear of the house features various 20th-century casements and a glazed extension, which is not considered to be of particular interest. A brick ridge stack is located to the right of the cross passage. Internally, the farmhouse has been substantially modified, but retains three rough beams at the kitchen end and three with a slight chamfer in the central parlour. It contains a spiral staircase in an internal corner and one 18th-century fireplace with an eaved surround and mantel shelf.
