Description

The Music Room at The Chantry is a detached structure built around 1840. It features rendered and scribed fronts, with rubble on the north and east sides, and has a slate roof. The room is lofty and sits over cellars, with a hipped roof and a segmental east end. There is a brick stack at the eaves in the middle of the north front. The south front showcases four arched windows with margin-bar sashes set in architraves that have keystones, below shallow blank recesses at the eaves. A plain string runs at the level where the arches spring, and bold alternating quoins are present, similar to those on The Chantry House. The east end is plain, while the north front has a door accessed by two slate steps. The west front connects to The Chantry through a door from a glazed link.

Inside, the main room features a segmental apse supported by pilasters and brackets. The ceiling is richly plastered and coved, with a central rose. The windows have colored glass along the margins, and there is a raised platform in the apse. A steep winder stair leads down to the cellars, which have slate slab floors and various compartments. A wide straight stair connects to the kitchen in The Chantry, and there is an iron spiral staircase leading to the apse. This music room is an important part of the grouping with the larger house.
