Description
Piles Peek is a house, formerly a farmhouse, that dates back to the 16th century or earlier. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble and features a slate roof with gabled ends. The layout consists of three rooms and a through passage, with a hall axial stack backing onto the passage and a large kitchen stack at the lower gable end. There is a rectangular stair turret at the rear and a later rear outshut. The building has two storeys and a long range of five to six windows, which include small 20th-century casements. The doorway to the through passage is located to the right of the centre and has a wooden chamfered cranked head doorframe, along with an open-fronted stone porch that has a slated lean-to roof. Inside, there is a stud wall on the lower side of the through passage, and the fireplaces are blocked. The hall features chamfered ceiling beams, and there is a chamfered wooden cranked head doorway at the rear of the hall leading to the newel stairs. A similar doorframe is found at the top of the stairs leading to the central room. The roof structure has not been inspected but may be medieval.
