Description
The conduit located approximately 2.5 metres north of No. 4 on Crowthers Hill in Dartmouth is a water conduit built in 1599 and rebuilt in 1847, as noted on the date plaque. It is constructed from stone rubble laid in rough courses, with painted sandstone dressings. An oblong block of masonry projects from the corner of No. 4, featuring a crenellated parapet. The narrower northern end, which faces South Ford Road, appears to have housed the tap, indicated by an iron plate protected by a pair of projecting iron hoops. Above this area, there is a plaque carved with the municipal seal and the date 1599, which was recut around 1985. Additionally, another plaque on the east side facing Crowthers Hill commemorates the conduit’s rebuilding in 1847 during the mayoralty of N Clift.
