Description
The conduit adjoining the north-east corner of No. 12 was built in 1574, rebuilt in 1678, and again in 1827, as indicated by the date plaque. It is constructed of painted stone rubble and features an oblong block of masonry that projects from the corner of No. 12. The conduit has a projecting coping and a low pitched top. The long side facing Crowthers Hill includes a sunken square panel, which likely served as a blocked doorway to the plumbing. The narrow northern end appears to have housed the tap, and it has a pair of projecting iron hoops that are thought to have protected it from traffic. The date plaque above displays the years 1574 and 1678, along with an "E" for erected, the year 1827, and the name of the mayor at that time, H Holdsworth.
