Description

This is an early to mid-19th century house, potentially with an earlier core, located on Smith Street in Dartmouth. The building is constructed of stone rubble side walls and roughcast fronting over timber framing, with stone rubble stacks in the left side wall. The roof is slate and hipped to the left.

The house has a plan consisting of one room wide and two rooms deep. Originally, there was a ground-floor front shop with former stables at the rear, now incorporated into the shop area. The front of the building has been altered with a late 19th century timber shop front featuring clerestory windows with glazing bars, which extends around the left corner. A 20th-century glazed door occupies the shop doorway to the right, and a 20th-century door with overlight sits to the right of the shop doorway, marking the entrance to the house. A full-width fascia is supported by a series of small fluted brackets. The upper floor has a single 12-pane sash window. The roof has plain eaves.

The interior contains plain carpentry and joinery detail where it is exposed, with no evidence of earlier features than the 19th century. The building is included on the list for its group value.
