Description
The water conduit adjoining the rear wall of No. 16 Smith Street in Dartmouth is likely from the 16th century but was rebuilt in 1852, as noted on a plaque. It is constructed from local stone rubble and features painted ashlar or possibly replacement concrete coping. The conduit has an oblong shape and is built against the back wall of No. 16 Smith Street, with ridged coping on top. The long north face includes a boarded hatch, which presumably provides access to the plumbing. On the narrow east side, there is a plaque that reads "Rebuilt 1825, H.M. Baker, mayor," situated above the iron fittings for the tap. This conduit is one of several similar structures found around Dartmouth.
