Description

The stables and adjoining shippon, located immediately northwest of Great Englebourne, date from around 1823. Constructed from slate rubble, the stables feature red brick arches over the windows and doorways, with slate hanging on the rear. The roof is made of grouted scantle slate, has hipped ends, and includes reused early creased ridge tiles.

The east front of the stable wing has two coach house doorways on the left, which are topped with round brick arches and stone imposts. To the right, there are segmental-headed stable doors and windows, with three windows and one doorway above. The south end wall has three rows of pigeon holes with stone ledges. There are external stone stairs at the rear to the left, leading over the coach house.

The long shippon range is positioned at right angles to the northwest, featuring a row of shippon doorways with segmental brick arches, some of which are half-blocked to serve as windows. Above these doorways are loft doors, some of which are blocked. There is also a row of pigeon holes below the eaves, with stone ledges. The shippon is built into the bank at the rear, with loft doors at a higher ground level. The interior has not been inspected.
