Key's Englebourne Farmhouse

Key's Englebourne Farmhouse is a farmhouse, originally dating from the early 17th century, and subsequently altered and extended in the mid-19th century and with a further extension in the late 1980s. It has been subdivided into three separate dwellings. The farmhouse is constructed of slate rubble, partially rendered, with a partly slate-hung first floor. The roof is slate, with gable and hipped ends; the right-hand end has grouted scantle slates with some old crested ridge tiles, while the left-hand side has been re-slated more recently. There are rendered chimney stacks, including a right gable end stack with a tapered cap and drips, raised in brick, and a front lateral stack flush with the front wall. The original plan was based on a three-room and through-passage layout, with the lower end on the left. A stair hall was inserted between the inner room and hall, and a parallel range was added to the rear of the higher end in the mid-19th century. A 1980s extension was added to the rear of the lower end. The front of the farmhouse has an asymmetrical fenestration of 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars. There is a 20th-century slate-hung porch to the left of the centre, leading to the passage doorway. To the right of the centre is a two-storey projection, probably originally a porch, now with a ground-floor French window. At the far left end of the front is an external stone staircase leading to a loft doorway, now partially blocked to form a window. At the rear, a mid-19th-century parallel range has been added to the left-hand (higher end) side; it is rendered with a grouted slate roof and gable end stacks, and features two storeys and a symmetrical arrangement of sash windows and a central doorway. The 1980s rear addition to the lower right end is slate-hung. Inside, the hall features an ovolo-moulded cross-beam over a plastered passage partition. A chamfered, rounded arch timber doorframe leads to a blocked doorway in the lower end room. The large lateral hall fireplace has a slightly cambered arch with slate voussoirs. C20 stairs have been inserted into the higher end of the hall. The roof principals are mortice and tenoned at their apexes and have later collars, ridgepiece and rafters.
