Description
Chapel Cottage and the adjoining school room, located on the south side of High Street in Chittlehampton, date from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from rendered stone rubble and features an asbestos slate roof with gable ends. There is a rear lateral stack with a brick shaft serving the cottage.
The layout consists of the cottage on the left, which has a single room plan, a staircase in the left-hand rear corner, and an entrance passage to the right. The school room extends to the right under a continuous roof. The cottage is two storeys high, while the school room is single storey.
The cottage has a two-window range featuring late 19th century or early 20th century two-light casements with six panes per light, above a three-light casement with six panes per light to the left of a plank door that has two glazed upper panels. The school room to the right has two plank doors, each accompanied by a large window with three over six panes to its right. The left end of the cottage is accentuated by quoins. The interior has been altered in the 20th century.
