CHULMLEIGH SS 61 SE 5/175 The Gamekeeper's Cottage and adjoining Cartshed south east of Colleton Manor - II

Cottage and integral cartshed formed from part of the earlier stables qv adjoining. Circa late C19 incorporating part of circa C18 extension of C17 stables. Local sedimentary stone rubble, the earlier right hand (west) end is dressed and coursed stone. Slate roof with granite coped gable ends with ball and cap finials. Brick axial stack at centre. Plan: 2-room plan with central axial stack, the right hand (west) room probably formed out of the extension to the C17 stables q.v. adjoining right (west), since it has what appears to be a blocked cart-entrance with a large timber lintel in the front wall which is built of dressed masonry unlike the rest of the building which is stone rubble. There is a C19 integral cartshed with a gable end entrance at the left (east) end and a later C19 wing at the back of the left hand end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetical 3-window range. Late C19 3-light casements with glazing bars. Late C19 plank door to left with small rectangular fanlight and a wider blocked doorway immediately to its right. On the right at the front a lean-to outshut that conceals a large timber lintel, probably to a former cart entrance. The long range continues as a cart-shed at the left end with a blind front (north) wall and wide segmental brick arch cart-entrance on the gable end wall. Interior: only briefly observed and no exposed features were evident. The roof has straight principal rafters resting on the wall tops.
