Description

The Gamekeeper's Cottage and the adjoining cartshed, located southeast of Colleton Manor, date from the late 19th century but incorporate elements from a 17th-century stable and an 18th-century extension. The building is constructed from local sedimentary stone rubble, with the earlier right-hand (west) end featuring dressed and coursed stone. It has a slate roof with granite coped gable ends topped with ball and cap finials and a central brick axial stack.

The cottage has a two-room plan with the central stack, and the right-hand room likely originates from the extension of the 17th-century stables, as indicated by a blocked cart entrance with a large timber lintel in the front wall, which is made of dressed masonry unlike the rest of the structure. The left (east) end contains a 19th-century integral cartshed with a gable end entrance, as well as a later 19th-century wing at the back.

The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical three-window range, with late 19th-century three-light casements that include glazing bars. A late 19th-century plank door is located to the left, accompanied by a small rectangular fanlight and a wider blocked doorway to its right. The front of the right side has a lean-to outshut that hides a large timber lintel, likely from a former cart entrance. The long range extends into a cartshed at the left end, which has a blind front (north) wall and a wide segmental brick arch cart entrance on the gable end wall. The interior was only briefly observed, and no exposed features were noted, though the roof has straight principal rafters resting on the wall tops.
