Description
Mill Cottage is a mid-19th century cottage located in Chulmleigh, constructed from painted rendered stone rubble and cob. It features a bitumenized slate roof with gable ends and a brick stack that includes a bread oven projection at the right end. The cottage has a plan consisting of three rooms arranged in a line, with direct entry into the room at the right end. There is a 20th-century outshot at the rear.
The exterior is notable for its unusual single-storey design and includes a three-window range. The 19th-century fenestration remains intact, featuring 12-paned hornless sashes with a single boarded shutter for each window. The off-centre doorway towards the right end has a four-panelled door.
The interior has been altered in the 20th century. This unusual cottage was likely originally a toll-house but later served as housing for workers associated with the railway system.
