Description
Numbers 1 and 2 Ashleigh Villas are a semi-detached pair of villas built in 1883. They are constructed from unrendered snecked stone rubble with brick dressings and quoins. The roof is half-hipped and covered with red clay tiles, featuring alternating triple bands of plain and fishscale patterned tiles, along with crested ridge tiles and shaped hip finials. A large axial brick stack with oversailing courses caps the roof.
The villas have a mirror plan layout, each being single room wide and two rooms deep, sharing four fireplaces with a central stack. The entrance doorways are located on each side, with single-storey sculleries or larders at the rear angles. The buildings are two storeys tall and symmetrical in design.
Windows have brick surrounds, with ground floor windows featuring concrete lintels. A large central half dormer, adorned with fishscale patterned tiles on the gable, is flanked by two 3-light casements that feature an 1883 datestone initialled MR (Mark Rolle). The casements on both floors are transomed, with the upper storey having 12 panes above the transom and 2 panes below each light, while the ground floor casements have the top pane only quartered. Each side of the ground floor casements has a brick porch with clay tiled gabled roofs, which also have crested ridge tiles and shaped finials. The blind gables of the porches are decorated with timber struts, and the doors are plank doors with narrowly spaced chamfered cover strips.
