Description
NUMBER 3 HILLSIDE is a cottage, likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. The exterior is constructed of roughcast rendered stone rubble and cob, with a half-hipped thatched roof. A tall, unrendered stone rubble stack at the rear lateral side features a tapered cap. The original plan included two rooms, with direct entry into the larger, heated room on the right (lower) side, and a narrower, unheated room to the left, containing a staircase at the rear. A lean-to former stable at the left end has been incorporated into the dwelling. The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window front. The windows are 20th-century replacements, all being 2-light casements with 2 panes per light. A 20th-century gabled slate roof covers a porch on the left-hand side, where a ground floor window now occupies the space of a previously blocked doorway. Inside, the right-hand room has a rough cross ceiling beam. A solid wall partition separates the rooms, and there is evidence of a blocked doorway at the right end. The 20th-century fireplace probably conceals an earlier oven. The roof was not inspected. To the rear, on the right-hand end, is a small covered pump house with a lead pump.
