Description
Thatch Cottage and Leol Cottage are two adjoining cottages dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. They are constructed from rendered stone rubble and cob, featuring brick dressings on Thatch Cottage. Both cottages have thatched roofs with gable ends. Thatch Cottage has a brick ridge stack and a brick stack at the left gable end, which includes a projection for a bread oven at the front, as well as a lateral brick stack at the rear right end.
The interiors have been significantly altered in the 20th century. Leol Cottage, which is on the left, now has a direct entry into a single principal room and a 20th-century staircase located in the front right-hand corner. Thatch Cottage, on the right, consists of two rooms, with the room on the right heated by a rear lateral stack. It has a central entrance lobby with a staircase at the rear, which is accessible from the left-hand room.
Both cottages are two storeys high. Leol Cottage features a two-window range, with a 20th-century window and a small two-light casement window, each with four panes per light, illuminating the staircase to the right. There is also a single light window to the left of a shallow lean-to porch with a plank inner door. Thatch Cottage has brick surrounds on its principal windows and also features a two-window range, with all windows being two-light casements with two panes per light. The right-hand upper storey window has been replaced in the late 20th century. Additionally, there is a 20th-century thatched gabled canopy over a 19th-century six-panelled door. The roof has not been inspected.
